Common Questions About DBT Counseling
1. What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based form of therapy that teaches practical skills for managing emotions, improving relationships, and handling stress more effectively. It combines acceptance strategies with change strategies to support long-term growth.

2. Who can benefit from DBT?
DBT was originally developed for individuals experiencing intense emotions or self-destructive behaviors, but it’s now used to help people with anxiety, depression, PTSD, mood disorders, and relationship difficulties. It’s especially helpful for anyone who feels emotions strongly and wants tools to manage them.

3. How is DBT different from other types of therapy?
Unlike traditional talk therapy, DBT focuses on teaching structured skills in four areas: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. It blends validation (accepting where you are) with coaching (helping you move toward change).

4. What does a typical DBT session look like?
In individual counseling, sessions focus on applying DBT skills to real-life situations. Clients will also participate in skills training, where they learn and practice DBT techniques in a supportive setting.
5. How long does DBT take?
DBT is often structured as a longer-term treatment. At Rock Creek Wellness, we require a minimum commitment of one year to the program. This allows enough time to learn the full set of DBT skills, practice them consistently, and see meaningful, lasting progress. Many clients find that a year of therapy provides the stability and support needed to build real change.

6. Do I have to do both individual therapy and skills training?
Yes. At Rock Creek Wellness, both individual counseling and skills training are required parts of our DBT program. This combination is proven to be the most effective way to learn and apply DBT skills. We offer 1:1, group, and a convenient online membership program through Rock Creek Wellness Online.

7. Is DBT evidence-based?
Yes. DBT has been extensively researched and shown to be effective for reducing self-harm behaviors, improving emotional stability, and enhancing quality of life.

8. Does insurance cover DBT?
Yes, we accept a variety of insurance plans, including Aetna, Highmark, Optum, United Healthcare, UPMC for You/Carelon, Tricare, Medicare, and UPMC. We also accept self-pay. If your plan isn’t listed, we’ll work with you to explore out-of-network benefits. Insurance does NOT cover our Rock Creek Wellness Online Membership or Mindfulness Coaching.

9. How do I know if DBT is right for me?
If you often feel overwhelmed by your emotions, struggle with relationships, or want structured tools to cope with stress, DBT may be a good fit. We encourage you to reach out for a consultation to see if it aligns with your goals.
