Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Life can feel overwhelming, especially when the negatives seem to outweigh the positives. For some, this imbalance leads to despair or hopelessness, making it hard to imagine a future that feels worthwhile. In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), we believe that every life is meaningful and everyone can have a life that they experience as worth living.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment that helps individuals manage emotions, cope with stress, and improve relationships.
Originally developed to support people experiencing intense emotions and self-destructive behaviors, DBT has since been shown to be effective for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, and difficulty regulating emotions.

At its core, DBT blends cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices. This means clients learn to both change unhelpful patterns and accept themselves as they are—creating space for lasting growth and balance.

Who Can Benefit from DBT?
DBT may be a good fit if you struggle with:

-
Impulsive or self-destructive behaviors

Feeling “stuck” in old patterns

How DBT Helps
DBT focuses on four core skill areas:

-
Mindfulness – learning to stay present and grounded.
-
Emotion Regulation – understanding and managing emotional responses.
-
Distress Tolerance – building tools to manage crises without making things worse.
-
Interpersonal Effectiveness – strengthening communication and relationships.

These modules are taught and learned over the course of a year or so. As a client, you have individual as well as skills training, each once a week. Skills training is where you learn new DBT skills, while individual therapy is more similar to talk therapy.

DBT clients will be given and are to keep Diary Cards which track moods, urges, behaviors, and skills use.

Through individual sessions and skills training, DBT provides practical strategies you can use right away in everyday life.

Steps Toward Healing

DBT Pre-Assessment
We'll help you determine how suitable DBT is for you by asking you questions and explaining how DBT works. If you decide that DBT is the right therapy for you, we'll ask you to commit to the treatment and the length of treatment.

Individual DBT Therapy
Individual DBT therapy involves weekly sessions with your therapist. Your therapist will ask you to keep a diary card to track your emotions and actions and to look for patterns of behavior. You’ll bring this card with you to your sessions so you and your therapist can decide what to work on for each session.

DBT Skills Training
We offer 1:1, group, and a convenient online membership program through Rock Creek Wellness Online, where you can continue learning and reinforcing DBT skills at your own pace.

Skills Coaching
DBT often involves coaching to support you in your daily life. This means you can message your therapist at certain times for support between sessions.
