Meet
Stefanie Montgomery, LPC
Since graduating from Slippery Rock University in 2003, I have been working in the counseling field. I have been a DBT therapist for about three years, fully embracing this model since starting at Rock Creek Wellness. I find the skills taught in DBT personally transformative, helping me navigate painful life experiences. This passion drives me to teach these skills, which I often hear clients wish they had learned sooner. DBT’s structured approach allows clients to learn and apply skills even amidst life challenges, leading to faster progress than with CBT. These universal skills can treat a range of concerns, including trauma, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders, and marital difficulties. In couples therapy, both individuals complete skills training before joint sessions, leading to positive change through early application of DBT skills. Witnessing this positive change and the inherent skillfulness in each patient is incredibly exciting for me.
My Hope for Wellness
My hope for wellness is that people will be more open to working on all aspects of their health, such as getting enough sleep, eating healthier, exercising, financial stress, being open to spirituality and its importance, etc, especially at an earlier age instead of focusing on medication as a way to try to “fix” their problems. I’m also hopeful that there will be less stigma around mental health and those seeking treatment, so that people will come into treatment earlier, before their problems become overwhelming.
Interesting Tidbits
I am creative and enjoy listening to music, playing the guitar, crocheting, and reading. I am in a bowling league and enjoy being active and having time to sit still in nature and reflect. I am involved in my church and enjoy volunteering with the youth, and I was recently helping coach soccer for the last few seasons. This was a fun experience for me to be able to show young kids how to play a sport I love. I have a strong spiritual connection, and I believe this is what has helped me get through the hardest times in my life. I enjoy having fun and laughing, and believe that life is serious enough, and that we need to take time to have fun every day. I love to go to the beach and enjoy this when I have time to vacation. I have 3 dogs whom I enjoy spending lots of time with. One of my favorite meals is steak tips, with penne noodles and asparagus mixed in a balsamic glaze with lots of cheese. I enjoy eating and am becoming more open to trying new things that I once would not try.
